CELEBRATING OUR VOLUNTEERS!
VOLUNTEERS are the backbone of Highland County Historical Society! Studies have shown that those who volunteer are typically the more active community members. In 2012, it was found that 26.5% of the population of the United States contributed 7.9 BILLION hours of volunteer service. Parents of children under the age of 18 volunteer at a higher rate than the population as a whole. Adults who began volunteering as youth are twice as likely to volunteer as adults. Research has demonstrated that volunteering leads to better health and that older volunteers are the most likely to received mental and physical health benefits from their volunteering activity. Why do you want to volunteer?
Think about what you wish to accomplish as a volunteer for Highland County Historical Society. Is your primary interest in the preservation and sharing of local history? Do you enjoy meeting the public and engaging people in discussions about history? Does your interest in volunteering lie more with physical labor of helping to keep the museum and/or grounds tidy? Do you enjoy record keeping or research? What skills do you have which will help you meet your interest?
What does a volunteer do?
Volunteers can perform one of several functions.
We need GREETERS who stay near the entrance of Highland House and greet visitors as they arrive, give them a brief description of the Museum and provide any brochures and assistance as needed.
We need SALES ASSOCIATES who would like to work the Museum Shop. With extra training, these folks will greet customers of the shop, advise them of any current sales going on, process purchases and keep the shop tidy.
We need those who enjoy "grunt work." From time to time, we call upon these folks to help with extra cleaning, moving things, processing the newsletter to get it ready to mail, etc.

How much would I be expected to work?
That is pretty much up to you! We would like our SALES ASSOCIATES to work once a month, both to help lessen the load on others, as well as keep up your skills on our AUTOMATED SALES SYSTEM.
Will I receive training?
By all means! We will never throw you into a situation in which you don't feel you have sufficient training to do the job. Special training sessions are held periodically on our SALES SYSTEM to make sure associates are comfortable processing sales, especially those involving credit cards.
